I am honored to have had the privilege of sitting down with the champions who secured their place in the second stage of this year's Triwizard Tournament to discuss fear, ambition, friendship, and what it truly means to carry the hopes of an entire school. From quiet determination to unwavering confidence, each competitor offered a unique perspective on the journey that brought them this far.
One question in particular seemed to reveal more than any other: What was your first thought when your name emerged from the Goblet of Fire?
For some, disbelief came before excitement. Gabe recalls hearing nothing but his own name before reality finally caught up with him. Estella Vitalli describes herself as "shocked," while Maisie Wildwood admits she entered expecting never to be chosen at all. Alec Rosier, true to form, spent several long seconds convincing himself there had to be another Alec somewhere in the Great Hall.
Sebastian Sallow, however, had a rather different response. "About time." Whether that confidence is the mark of experience or simply remarkable optimism remains to be seen, though if confidence alone decided the Tournament, the Cup might already have a name engraved on it.
The contrast between the champions extends far beyond their first impressions. When asked whether they rely more heavily on instinct or preparation, opinions were almost evenly divided. Gabe believes preparation only goes so far in a world that "doesn't play fair," while Sebastian argues that instinct is all that remains once a real crisis begins. Maisie shares that trust in spontaneity, whereas Estella and Alec place their confidence in careful planning, Alec being Alec of course remarking that instinct is often "just your brain trying to remember the preparation anyway." Cordelia Ollivander falls somewhere between the two, admitting that she often spends so long analysing every possibility that the challenge threatens to begin before she's reached a conclusion.
Their approaches to magic proved equally varied. Cleverness emerged as the most common answer, though each competitor defined it differently. Gabe sees clever magic as the balance between recklessness and hesitation. Cordelia believes the smallest detail can reveal the safest path forward, while Alec argues that boldness is often nothing more than surviving a questionable decision. Estella, meanwhile, offers perhaps the most relatable strategy of all. "I just want to live," she says with a laugh.
Not every champion measures success by the Triwizard Cup itself. For Sebastian, victory is simple proof that he belongs at the top. Gabe's motivation is more intimate, hoping only to make his girlfriend, Aura Salvatore, proud after supporting him throughout the Tournament. Maisie speaks of achievement rather than recognition, while Estella, as mentioned earlier, reminds herself that simply making it out alive would already count for something.
Despite their different ambitions, some themes emerged throughout all the interviews. Several of the contestants admitted to overthinking. Some spoke of fears they rarely voice aloud. Cordelia Ollivander believes her greatest strength and weakness are one and the same; she explains that she often spends too long analysing every possibility before making a move. Alec echoed a similar answer, while Estella confessed that the thought of another student being hurt weighs more heavily on her than the dangers she may face herself.
Of course, not every revelation carried the weight of life and death. Estella revealed she can apparently fall asleep almost anywhere, while Alec insisted that his famously mysterious expression is usually nothing more dramatic than trying to remember where he last left his wand. Cordelia also felt obliged to defend her reputation, assuring readers that she does, in fact, laugh from time to time.
If the First Task taught us anything, it is that dragons are perhaps the easiest part of the Tournament to understand. The champions themselves are considerably more complicated. Some chase glory, others survival, and one, apparently, simply hopes never to run out of snacks. Whatever awaits beneath the Black Lake, one thing is certain: the remaining champions will face it in very different ways.
